Aligarh is regarded as among India’s most populous state. It is home to one of the best learning centres in the country. The city’s landscape is dotted with a number of other educational institutions, including the renowned Aligarh Muslim University. Aligarh has a rich history and it is here that the battle of Ally Ghur was fought. Aligarh’s erstwhile name was Kol, probably named after the original tribe that inhabited its locales. Apart from being an educational centre, the city is also one of North India’s commercial centre. It is home to the lock manufacturing industry – the industry that has its roots in the Mughal period. The city is known for its brass products and the famous ‘Aligarh Pajamas’. A visit to Aligarh is never complete without a visit to the popular Aligarh Fort. The structure was originally built in the 14th century. The fort was ruled by the Marathas. It is interesting to note that during 1857 sepoy mutiny, the soldiers standing guard at the fort mutinied but did not play a part in murdering the officers. The fort stands tall and is surrounded by a deep moat. One cannot help but be in awe of the architecture. Another place of historical interest to visit is the Aligarh Muslim University. The varsity was set up by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875-78. It is regarded as among the best Anglo-Muslim educational hubs in the country. The Centre funds the university and stands a testament to the varied and marvellous architecture. The college spans across 1,155 acres and is a popular tourist destination. The best time to visit Aligarh is during the winter season. The temperature is cool and is perfect taking a tour of monuments and other places of historical significance. If you are planning a trip to Aligarh, make sure you set your dates between October and March. When planning a trip, finding the right accommodation is important. You want the place to be a home away from home. With OYO Rooms, you can have the best of both worlds – a place to call your home as well as a cozy abode with great amenities. If you do not want to stray far from the city, the OYO budget hotel opposite the city’s old bus stand will allow you access to the important hubs. The OYO hotel near central hospital on GT road is also a good option.
